Midterms 2026

Front pages in France, Austria, Italy, Canada and Mexico see Trump weakened after the election, they disagree on how much

From Le Figaro to La Jornada, the interpretations range from a difficult end to his term to a new counterweight to a president who is humiliated but not disempowered.

On the Thursday after the congressional election, Trump's defeat dominates many front pages outside the US. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Indian website The Wire (5 November, 08:30 CET) has collected 44 front pages from around the world, the Catalan newspaper Ara (09:47 CET) a selection from the US and Europe. What the papers have in common is the image of a weakened president. How much power he has left, they see differently.

France: a difficult end, a new counterweight. Le Figaro writes, according to The Wire, that the heavy defeat condemns Trump to a difficult remainder of his term. Le Monde speaks of an electoral setback. The business newspaper Les Echos sees the new Congress as a counterweight to Trump.

Austria: humiliated, not disempowered. Der Standard's headline, according to The Wire, is “Gedemütigt, aber nicht entmachtet” (Humiliated, but not disempowered). The Kronen Zeitung writes that Trump's defeat has consequences for the whole world.

Italy: isolated. According to Ara, the Corriere della Sera sees Trump as defeated and isolated. Ara reads the European front pages as a whole as emphasizing Trump's isolation.

Canada and Mexico: a hard blow, cracks in the empire. Le Journal de Montréal speaks, according to The Wire, of quite a slap in the face for Trump. The left-wing Mexican newspaper La Jornada's headline says the empire is cracking.

Brazil: a lame duck with decrees. The newspaper Correio Braziliense (5 November), in an analysis by Rodrigo Craveiro, expects two years of limited governability, blockades and congressional investigations. Trump will, however, continue to govern by decree. The political scientist Rogowski of the University of Chicago says there: “Trump terá margem de manobra limitada” (Trump will have only limited room for manoeuvre).

These are the interpretations of the respective newspapers. More press voices from abroad are under Reports.
