Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi wants to keep working with Trump, the German government considers an assessment of the election premature
Tokyo and Berlin stress the alliance with the US, Beijing confirms its line, in Brazil a minister celebrates the Democrats' victory.
Further governments have commented on the congressional election. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet.
Japan: no comment, but cooperation with Trump. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi commented on the election result herself for the first time on 5 November at around 10:30 CET (18:30 local time) as she left her official residence. According to the broadcaster ANN (11:00 CET), she said that since this concerns the domestic politics of another country, the government is not commenting. The alliance with the US is the cornerstone of Japan's foreign and security policy, she said. She wants to further strengthen relations and “トランプ大統領とも協力をしていきたい” (also work together with President Trump). The day before, the government in Tokyo had already described the alliance as independent of the election outcome.
Germany: too early for an assessment. Deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer said, according to the news agency dts, published at Mittelstand Nachrichten (4 November, 19:12 CET), that it is too early to foresee the consequences. The German government does not comment in detail on election results in other countries, he said. Its interests remain a stable international order, rules-based trade and a strong NATO. The US is and remains a “wichtiger Verbündeter” (important ally), even with a different constellation in both chambers.
China: an internal matter, consensus of the heads of state. Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun answered a question about relations with the US after the election on 5 November in Beijing. According to the portal Sina (08:22 CET), he said China had already commented on this. The midterm election is an internal matter of the US, he said. China wants to implement the consensus of the two heads of state with Washington and build a constructive, strategically stable relationship on the basis of respect, fairness and reciprocity. This matches the line of his colleague Mao Ning the day before.
Brazil: a minister rejoices, Lula stays silent. While President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the presidential palace did not comment, José Guimarães, Minister of Institutional Relations, spoke, according to the portal Brasil em Folhas (4 November, 17:58 CET), of a “tsunami americano” (American tsunami). The change began with an “onda vermelha” (red wave) in Brazil, he said, and Trump's defeat is a victory for the democratic world.
These are the views of the respective government representatives. Earlier reactions from Tokyo, Berlin, Beijing and Brasília are under Reports, what the new Congress can do from January is in the timeline.
