Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha expects new US steps to support Ukraine after the congressional election
In Bucharest, Sybiha says an end to the war is not realistic without the US, and Europe should take on a complementary role.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented on the congressional election in the US at a press conference in Bucharest on 5 November. This is based on projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet.
According to the news agency Reuters, published on Yahoo News (17:56 CET), Sybiha expects new support from the US after the election. He said: “We expect new steps to support Ukraine”. Every change offers the chance of new momentum.
According to Reuters, Sybiha does not consider an end to the war with Russia realistic without the US and President Trump. In parallel, Europe must define its new role as a complementary track alongside the most important one, the American path. On the battlefield, he sees no signs that Russia seriously wants to negotiate. Ahead of talks with Russia and the US in Abu Dhabi next week, Ukraine wants to use every opportunity to accelerate the peace efforts.
The expectation matches the hope President Zelensky had expressed after the Democrats' victory. The Kremlin, by contrast, expects no change in US policy on Ukraine. This is the view of the Ukrainian government. Further reactions are under Reports, what the new Congress can do from January is in the timeline.
