Mexican President Sheinbaum considers it likely that raids against migrants influenced the Latino vote

At her morning press conference, Sheinbaum says many Latinos who voted for Trump in 2024 voted for the Democrats this time.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum again commented on the US congressional election at her morning press conference in the National Palace on 5 November. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet.

According to the portal Infobae (16:25 CET), Sheinbaum was asked whether the raids by the US immigration agency ICE had influenced how Latinos voted. She considered this very likely. Initial analyses showed that many Latinos, including Mexicans, who had voted for Trump in 2024 no longer voted for the Republicans this time, but for the Democrats.

The newspaper El Imparcial reproduces her answer verbatim: “Sí es muy probable, no tengo el dato” (“Yes, very likely, I don't have the figure”). Sheinbaum called it plausible that raids against Latinos had influenced the vote for the Democrats. According to both reports, she did not comment on trade and tariffs that day.

On election day, Sheinbaum had said that Mexico would respect the result, and did not assess the election. This is the assessment of the Mexican president, not an analysis of election data. Further reactions are under Reports, what the new Congress can do from January is in the timeline.
