Zelensky wants to work toward a new US aid package after the congressional election and fight for 16 billion dollars in halted aid
In an interview with the broadcaster TSN, the Ukrainian president sees rising chances of additional US aid after the election.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on 5 November in an interview with the Ukrainian broadcaster TSN about further US aid after the congressional election. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet. The new Congress convenes on 3 January 2027.
According to TSN (published 19:27 CET), he was asked whether Ukraine can get a new aid package after the Democrats' victory, the first since April 2024. Zelensky said the US had previously halted 16 billion dollars in aid for Ukraine. Ukraine must at least fight for this sum; it is grateful for everything given so far. A new package has to be worked on: “Ми повинні над цим працювати” (We have to work on this). He does not name the Democrats in his answers; the link to the election comes from the question.
According to the state news agency Ukrinform (21:35 CET), Zelensky also said in the same interview that Ukraine must quickly adjust to the new political situation in the US. It should consolidate the support it has in both parties and adapt the dialogue to the new balance of power. The chances of additional US aid could now rise.
The day before, Zelensky had told ZDF he hoped for more help from Congress, and Foreign Minister Sybiha expects new US steps. The Kremlin, by contrast, expects no change in US policy on Ukraine. This is the view of the Ukrainian government. Further reactions are under Reports, what the new Congress can do from January is in the timeline.
