Moscow wants to wait for the new Congress and already accuses it of an anti-Russian consensus
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova expects the new majorities to have a strong influence on the US, but has for years seen Congress as blocking normalisation.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the congressional election at her weekly briefing on 5 November. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet.
According to the state agency RIA Novosti (15:29 CET), Zakharova said Moscow is following the count closely. She spoke of a convincing victory for the Democrats. The new majorities will significantly influence all areas of life in the US, including legislation and international affairs.
The state broadcaster RT (15:46 CET) summarises that the election is an internal affair of the US, but that the new Congress could noticeably change international politics.
According to the state agency TASS, Zakharova said Russia must formally wait until Congress is fully formed and the laws relating to Russia are settled. At the same time, she recalled the past years. Congress openly sabotaged ideas for normalising relations, she said. The business newspaper Vedomosti quotes her using the term a “stable anti-Russian consensus” in Congress.
On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Peskov had said that Moscow expects no change in US policy on Ukraine because of the new majority. This is the view of the Russian leadership. Further reactions are under Reports, what the new Congress can do from January is in the timeline.
