Meloni, Seoul's presidential office and EU Trade Commissioner Šefčovič see the alliance with the US unaffected by the congressional election
Italy's Prime Minister comments for the first time, Seoul sticks to its agreements on investment, Brussels and Athens want to continue contacts, Berlin wants to talk to both camps.
Further governments in Europe and Asia have commented on the congressional election. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet. What the statements have in common is that they see the relationship with the US independently of the majorities in Washington.
Italy: an ally, no matter who governs. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had not previously commented publicly on the election result. In an interview with the newspaper Quotidiano Nazionale, she said, according to the agency askanews (5 November, 09:14), that the US is a fundamental ally for Italy, “indipendentemente da chi li governa o dalle maggioranze parlamentari” (regardless of who governs it and what majorities there are in parliament). The Americans' verdict deserves respect, she said. She accused the left-wing opposition of now rediscovering, as if by magic, that the US is a great ally. According to the report, she said nothing about tariffs or Ukraine.
South Korea: agreements still apply. Kang Yu-jung, spokeswoman for the presidential office, answered a question from journalists after a meeting of the senior secretaries chaired by President Lee Jae-myung. According to the newspaper Seoul Economic Daily (5 November, 08:33 CET), she said: “특정한 선거 결과가 한미동맹에 영향을 미치지 않을 것” (A particular election result will not affect the alliance). The alliance has had the support of both parties in the US for more than 70 years, she said. The government wants to work closely with the administration and Congress in Washington and continue its investments in the US on the basis of the agreements between the two countries.
According to the Korea Times (07:31 CET, updated 08:49 CET), the president's chief of staff, Lim Kwang-hyun, had responses drawn up to possible consequences for tariffs and security. The Foreign Ministry wants to expand contacts with newly elected members of Congress. In the morning, Prime Minister Han Seong-sook had already said she expected no major changes.
EU and Germany: contacts with both camps. According to a report by the Chinese state agency Xinhua, published at China Daily (5 November), EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said the EU continues to see the US as a close ally and partner and will continue its contacts. The report does not say when or where he said this. Metin Hakverdi, the German government's coordinator for transatlantic cooperation, told the agency dpa, according to the same report, that America had decided on a change. Germany must not limit its contacts to one political camp, he said.
Greece and Norway. According to a report by the Turkish agency Anadolu at A News (4 November), Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said: “Greek-American relations will remain strong.” Major joint projects and agreements are not affected, he said. According to the same report, Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre called the result a strong political signal that voters wanted a change of direction.
These are the views of the respective government representatives. Earlier reactions from Rome, Seoul, Brussels and Berlin are under Reports, what the new Congress can do from January is in the timeline.
