Midterms 2026

In Israel and Brazil the heads of government remain silent on the election, politicians in both countries read the result through their own domestic politics

Israel's opposition calls for Netanyahu's resignation after the Democrats' victory, in Brazil ministers and lawmakers of the governing camp interpret Trump's defeat as a signal for their own country.

On 4 November 2026, neither Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has commented on the result of the congressional election. The basis is projections according to which the Democrats win the Senate and the House of Representatives. There is no official final result yet. In both countries, other politicians are using the result for debates at home.

Israel: opposition calls for resignation. According to the agency Reuters (12:08 CET), Netanyahu has so far remained silent on the outcome of the election, and his office did not respond to a request. Opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote, according to Reuters, that Netanyahu remaining in office endangers Israel: “It endangers our security, it jeopardises our democracy”. Yair Golan, leader of the party The Democrats, wrote on X that the result shows how toxic Netanyahu is among Democrats and Republicans alike. Lawmaker Gilad Kariv said, according to Yeni Şafak (13:52 CET, citing the agency Anadolu): “He must not continue to lead the State of Israel.” Netanyahu had destroyed relations with the Democrats and with half of the Republicans.

Brazil: governing camp sees a signal. According to Sem Pauta (15:28 CET), the presidential palace issued no statement, and Lula and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin had not commented on the result by then. José Guimarães, Minister of Institutional Relations, wrote on X: “Derrota de Trump é uma vitória do mundo democrático.” (Trump's defeat is a victory for the democratic world.) The government leader in Congress, Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT), and several lawmakers of the governing camp linked the result to Lula and to the Bolsonaro family. Renan Santos of the right-wing party Missão also criticised Trump and his closeness to Bolsonaro's camp. The report does not cite any statements from the Bolsonaro family on the result.

In both countries, those speaking out so far are mainly politicians who turn the result against domestic opponents, not the heads of government. These are the views of the respective politicians. Further reactions from governments are under Reports, the state of the count at the Senate and the House of Representatives.
