AP projects a Democratic majority in the Senate
According to reports, Iowa tipped the balance, Maine, Michigan and Alaska are still without a projection.
The news agency AP projects that the Democrats will win the majority in the Senate. This is reported by the magazine TIME, published on 4 November 2026 at 5:49 CET. The report does not give an exact time of the projection. It is a projection, not an official final result.
According to the Washington Examiner, Iowa tipped the balance. There the AP projects Democrat Josh Turek as the winner against Republican Ashley Hinson. According to the report, the projection came at 23:35 East Coast time, i.e. at 5:35 CET. At that point Turek had 50.8 percent and Hinson 46.1 percent. The report does not say how many votes had been counted. CBS News also projects Turek as the winner (published 5:32 CET).
In the calculation under Senate, with the projected wins in Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa, the Democrats would have 51 seats and the Republicans 46. With 51 seats, the Republican vice president no longer casts the deciding vote. The seats in Texas, Ohio, Kansas and Iowa had so far been in Republican hands.
According to TIME, Maine and Michigan are still open. No projection could be found for Alaska by 6:20 CET either; there the ranked-choice count follows on 18 November. According to TIME, the AP has not yet projected the majority in the House of Representatives; several broadcasters have done so. The bars on election night still show the election-day forecasts; more on the timeline under counting.
