In the Netherlands, 72 percent hope the Democrats win at least one chamber of Congress

A survey of the Hart van Nederland panel shows large differences by party voters and a cautious expectation for cooperation with Europe.

A large majority in the Netherlands wants the Democrats to gain in the congressional election. That is the finding of a survey of the panel of the television programme Hart van Nederland (SBS6). Sampling, fieldwork and weighting were carried out by the research agency No Ties, which belongs to Highberg. The results were weighted by gender, age, region, education and voting behaviour in the last election to the Tweede Kamer. The report does not give a number of respondents or a survey period. It was published on 2 November 2026 at 15:00 CET (Hart van Nederland).

Wish for Congress. 72 percent hope that the Democrats win the majority in at least one of the two chambers. 12 percent would rather see the Republicans keep power.

Differences by group. Among voters of the Forum voor Democratie (FvD), 45 percent hope that the Republicans keep the majority in both chambers. Among BBB voters it is 25 percent, among PVV voters 24 percent. According to the report, more respondents in both groups hope for a Democratic victory. Among men, 17 percent want a Republican success, among women 6 percent, among respondents younger than 45, 16 percent.

Expectations for Europe. If the Democrats win at least one chamber, 43 percent expect better cooperation between the USA and Europe. 33 percent expect little change, 8 percent a deterioration, 16 percent do not know. According to the report, one panel member hopes that the election will make Trump “wat minder stoom af gaat blazen” (let off a little less steam).

The survey measures wishes and expectations in the Netherlands, not the outcome of the election. Similar surveys from Germany, the EU, Canada and Mexico are in the Reports. The forecasts for both chambers are on the Senate and House of Representatives pages.
