Press in Colombia, South Korea and Russia asks on election day whether the result will be recognized
What El Tiempo, Kyunghyang Shinmun, RIA Novosti, Huanqiu, UNIAN and Energetyka24 write on the morning of 3 November 2026.
On the morning of election day, another question moves to the fore in the press of several countries: whether the result of the congressional election will be recognized. A newspaper in Colombia, one in South Korea and the Russian state agency RIA Novosti address this. Chinese state media, by contrast, look above all at the war with Iran. Media in Ukraine and Poland ask about the consequences for Europe.
Colombia. In an editorial, El Tiempo calls the election a test of the strength of US democracy. Whoever wins, the election must restore confidence in the democracy of the US. The newspaper recalls: “Several times Trump has questioned the legitimacy of elections.” It also sees consequences for NATO, Ukraine, Iran and Latin America (El Tiempo, 3 November 2026, 2:08 CET).
South Korea. Reporting from Washington, Jeong Yu-jin at Kyunghyang Shinmun also addresses, in six questions and answers, whether Trump would recognize an unfavorable result. The text points to lawsuits by the administration concerning Alaska and California that courts have dismissed, and to the fact that results can take days. For the rest of the term, the text expects Trump to keep governing with vetoes and executive power (Kyunghyang Shinmun, 3 November 2026, 6:37 CET).
Russia. The state agency RIA Novosti, based on polls, expects a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives and a close race for the Senate. Vladimir Vasilyev of the Institute for US and Canadian Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences names two tools of the White House there: contesting elections in individual districts and the veto. This will “only help to gain some time” for the Republicans (RIA Novosti, Mikhail Katkov, 3 November 2026, 6:00 CET).
China. The state portal Huanqiu, which belongs to the Global Times, names “livelihoods and the Iran war” as decisive. It relays reports by RFI and Bloomberg according to which Trump could begin a major attack on Iran after the election, especially after a Republican defeat. The political dispute in the US will continue regardless of the result (Huanqiu via Sina, 3 November 2026).
Ukraine. Kateryna Chernovol writes at UNIAN, citing Politico, that Ukraine will lose important supporters in Congress regardless of the outcome, such as Mitch McConnell, Thom Tillis, Don Bacon and Michael McCaul. Even a Democratic Congress would have difficulty passing laws for Ukraine with Trump in office (UNIAN, 2 November 2026, 23:32 CET).
Poland. At Energetyka24, Magdalena Melke calls the election a possible “red card” for the Trump administration. The US analyst Rafał Michalski says there that a Democratic majority could open new avenues of influence for the EU, but partly paralyze US foreign policy (Energetyka24, 3 November 2026, 6:30 CET).
The difference lies in the perspective: the texts from Colombia, South Korea and Russia ask about the procedure, the Chinese state media about the day after in the Middle East. All texts are the authors' assessments, not government statements. RIA Novosti and Huanqiu are state media. Earlier press reviews are under Reports. When the results will come is on the election night page. The forecasts for both chambers are on the Senate and House of Representatives pages.
