The Kremlin calls the congressional election an internal affair of the US and wants to follow it closely
What Kremlin spokesman Peskov says on the day before the election, as of 2 November 2026.
Russia's government is not commenting on the congressional election, but wants to observe it closely. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this to journalists on Monday, 2 November. The Russian news agency Interfax reported it at 12:48 Moscow time, i.e. at 10:48 CET (Interfax).
On the election. Asked whether the Kremlin was following the election, Peskov said, according to Interfax: “This is an internal affair of the United States.” Russia, however, is observing it very attentively, like the whole world.
On Ukraine. Asked whether the outcome could have consequences for a settlement in Ukraine, Peskov said that President Trump would remain president until the end of his term and would continue to pursue his foreign policy. He did not directly answer whether the election would influence the talks on Ukraine.
The Kremlin had already stated earlier that it did not expect a fundamental change of course by the US. Chancellor Merz and Japan's Foreign Minister Motegi made similar remarks, see Reports. The forecasts for both chambers are on the Senate and House of Representatives pages.
