EU Commission stays silent on the congressional election, diplomats at the EU and NATO expect no change of course
What the EU Commission and diplomats in Brussels expect from the election, according to AFP, as of 29 October 2026.
The EU Commission does not want to comment on the congressional election in the US. “We will not comment on elections in the EU or abroad,” Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said, according to the news agency AFP. The Commission is waiting for the results (AFP via Malay Mail, 29 October 2026).
Diplomats. According to AFP, diplomats at the EU and NATO expect little change, whatever the outcome of the election. A senior EU diplomat said that in his assessment nothing will change about the unpredictability. Several diplomats at NATO do not expect the election to affect the Pentagon's review of US troops in Europe. Its outcome is expected in December. In Brussels the focus is on closing a 70 billion euro gap in Ukraine's finances next year. The diplomats are not named.
Another view. According to AFP, Bruce Stokes, visiting fellow at the German Marshall Fund, points to a pattern: US presidents with problems at home often turn more strongly to foreign policy. That could also happen with Trump, for better or for worse.
